ASPIRA’s OST program fosters the development of social and emotional skills with enrichment activities that engage young people with content that focuses on prevention, early intervention, community development, academic enrichment and youth empowerment strategies. Risk factors in the categories of Individual, Family, School, Peer Group, and Community, are addressed in multi-faceted initiatives whose goals are to strengthen the capacity of students to successfully navigate the life stages of childhood. Applying ASPIRA’s theoretical approach (Awareness, Analysis and Action) which is based on the belief that youth are valued assets and can contribute to family, school, and community life, the OST program offers a network of opportunities to encourage students to get active and involved. Tools and instruments such as focus groups, student-led advisory boards, service learning committees and neighborhood collaborations, ensure that students ideas and opinions have a pro-social impact on both program and community development.
