Since 1961, ASPIRA of New York has been dedicated to serving New York City youth and their families, providing opportunities that would otherwise not be available to them, and serving as an effective advocate, fighting to improve education in the Puerto Rican and Latino communities.
Mission
To foster the social advancement of the Puerto Rican/Latino community by supporting its youth in the pursuit of educational excellence through leadership development activities and programs that emphasize commitment to the community and pride in the Puerto Rican/Latino culture.
Vision
To be the premier Latino youth services organization in New York, helping Latino youth to aspire to improve their lives through educational excellence, and to better their communities through enlightened leadership.
ASPIRA Triple A Process
The ASPIRA Youth Leadership Development curriculum places a high priority on the use of a student-centered, participatory project-oriented curriculum. Students in ASPIRA’s Leadership Development Program engage in the ASPIRA Triple A Process. ASPIRA uses a club structure to implement the process which consist of three principles: Awareness, Analysis and Action.
AWARENESS
What Do I Know?
The process of verbalizing or otherwise expressing already held knowledge on a subject matter.
ANALYSIS
What Do I Need To Know?
Through an inquiry based process of sharing and digesting information, participants engage in group work and critical thinking.
ACTION
Make It Happen.
Each participant will have opportunities to assume leadership responsibilities and to work cooperatively with a small group to achieve common goals.
